There is a small linear bearing mounted to each of the hidden halves of the hemispheres. A small steel carriage is bolted to the linear bearing. The carriage includes two tapered bosses that interface with bonded magnets in the other half. The two halves are held together by two neodymium magnets with a pull force of ~40lbs each.
